The Fortunate Woman...Karen exemplifies the fabulous fusion of the East and the West as she was born in Taiwan and grew up with the traditional Asian influence of her mother's family and the American influence of her father's after moving to Dallas, Texas. An excellent student, Karen also had a flair for the arts and fashion that was discouraged by her family. Unbeknownst to them, Karen spent hours in high school sketching clothing designs and bedazzling old jeans. Yet when she graduated at the top of her class, she acquiesced to the parental and academic pressure to use her intellect in an honorable field like law, until one night, after noshing on Chinese food, Karen was served the fateful fortune cookie which read, "Soon you will receive a fortune."
